There are thousands of home based business opportunities online and finding a legitimate one can be a tough challenge. This article focuses on the steps that an aspiring home business entrepreneur must do to avoid getting ripped off:

Do your homework. It is up to you to do further research and get to know as much information as possible about the company offering the home business. Never sign up or invest your money without analyzing how the system works. Interview other people who are already part of the company and find out if they’ll recommend the business to their family and friends.

Visit business forums. You can use the internet as a tool when doing your research. It’s good to visit forums that tackle home based businesses on the web. By participating in these board discussions, you’ll know what other people have to say about the company and you can raise questions as well.

Contact the representative of the company. Of course, you need to speak with a representative of the company offering the home business. Make sure that all your questions are answered clearly without any hesitations. A company that refuses to entertain questions are most likely to be a fraud.

Don’t refinance your home for the sake of a homebased opportunity. Even if you only have a limited budget, it is not a practical move to refinance your home just to start a home business. Why? Because running a business always involves risks and if your home business doesn’t go as expected, even if it is a legitimate business opportunity, using a refinanced mortgage loan could lead you to big trouble.

Know the costs involved. Everyone who plans to set up a home business should be aware of the costs involved not just in starting up but in running the business as well. For instance, how much would you need to shell out to be able to start the operations? Do you need to purchase or lease equipment? Many people have fallen to home business scams because they invested their personal money in the hopes to earn more without doing their own research.

Find a company that provides training and support. If you’re going to join an internet marketing company, make sure that you will be provided training and support especially if this is you’re first time venturing in a business.

Find out how the business is done and how income is generated. It is crucial that you are clear about the exact ways of the system. How will you be able to earn income? What kind of products would you sell? Is there a great market demand for these products? How do you plan to market the business? These are just some basic questions that you need clear answers to before making any decision.

Scammers are constantly on the look-out for new ways to trick people and make money from them. As more and more people are interested in working from home or starting a home business, scammers have also found cunning tactics to convince people to join fraudulent home businesses. How can you spot work-at-home business scams and stay away from them? Below are the red flags of fake home business opportunities:

Incomplete contact information. Observe how other companies offering work-at-home opportunities do not give out their complete contact information. If a company only provides an email address or a mobile number as means of communication, there is a huge possibility that you’re dealing with a home based business scam. Remember, a legitimate company is required to have a physical address and a business telephone number when securing a license to operate.

Payment is required to get hired. Many fly by night companies offering home business jobs require an upfront payment. You may be encouraged to sign up on the same day and submit your payment immediately. As soon as you hand them your money, these scammers will surely disappear. On the other hand, if you do your research, you can find many legitimate companies offering home based jobs that do not ask for any type of “initial payment” at all. If money is involved for you to get started, chances are you’re dealing with scammers.

No products or services to sell. Are you promised to earn big money without selling anything or barely doing any work? A lot of home based scams lure people by promising big cash. Watch out for Multi-Level Marketing schemes where your profit depends on the number of recruits or downlines you get.

Big, big profits in just a few weeks. Again, you’ll want to stay away from work-at-home jobs that promise to make you a millionaire in just a few weeks. Obviously, this is purely propaganda. No matter how well-planned a business is, there’s really no guarantee if you can make it unless you work hard for it.

It’s now or never. Venturing in a home business or a work-at-home job is a serious decision and one that should not be taken carelessly. If the company is really serious in providing legitimate home based jobs, the opportunity should always be there. You should never be forced to sign up with the threat that the opportunity won’t be there for you tomorrow.
