With the popularity of internet marketing ever increasing, more and more people are encouraged to try their luck in a work-at-home business. It is true that many home based entrepreneurs have been very successful but it is also worth noting that many who tried working from home have failed. Obviously, in order to succeed, much more is needed than just luck.
What are the possible reasons why some people fail in their efforts to run a home based business? What important factors should you be aware of before plunging in a work-at-home biz? In this article, let’s discuss some of the factors that lead to failure and what you can do to get past these hurdles.
Insufficient start-up capital. Just like with any traditional business, financing is important. If you think that starting a work-at-home business is completely free from costs, you are mistaken. For instance, you would need to spend money in setting up your website, buying equipment, obtaining the necessary licenses for your business, etc. Although the start-up capital required may be less, it is important to make sure that you have enough finances to fund your business.
False impressions. Some people have the notion that running a home based business requires very little time and effort. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. The reality is, managing a home based business requires a lot of work especially during the early stages of the business. If you’ve been used to working only 8 hours a day, a home business may involve more hours of work to succeed. If you’re not ready for this challenge, it could be very difficult to keep up with the demands of a work-at-home business.
Unrealistic expectations. If you think that a home business would instantly make you a millionaire, you are definitely mistaken. Yes it’s true that some of the biggest names in the business industry today are internet marketers and most of these marketers have started from scratch. Still, that doesn’t guarantee that you will make it big in just a short span of time. Unrealistic expectations can easily lead to frustrations and disappointment.
Not following your work schedule. One of the biggest challenges of working from home is managing your own work hours. Since you are working from home, there could be a lot of distractions that can get on your way especially if you’re a mother with kids. That is why setting up a definite schedule is very important. You should know your priorities and efficiently divide your time between your family, your business and yourself.
More importantly, success in managing a home based business would depend on how well you follow the schedule you’ve created. Putting off your tasks can easily lead to a back log of unfinished work and added pressure. Keeping up with your schedule can be difficult. You surely need to exercise self-discipline and motivation to make sure that everything has its time and place.

When I first started this business of mine, I didn’t pay too much attention to the “expectations”. As a consequence, it turned out to be a failure and yes, I got discouraged. I almost quit, however, with persistence, I made some changes to those expectations to more feasible ones. Now, my business has been continuously surviving and growing.
